TUMUT - CAPITAL FOR A DAY

Before Canberra was selected as the new Federal Capital of Australia many other locations were assessed as suitable spots for Australia's seat of government. On the 8th of October 1903 the Australian Parliament elected the township of Tumut in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains the capital of Australia.


Unfortunately they overturned this decision about 24 hours later when the senate substituted Bombala. Despite the change of decision, the Tumut locals celebrated at the Oriental Hotel. In this video film maker Richard Snashall visits Tumut on the 105th anniversary of the vote to ask the locals what the town might have been like if it had become the national capital...
